Rhian's mom gains upperhand over 'Big C'

MANILA, Philippines – TV host-actress Rhian Ramos revealed that her mother is in better shape now after having been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer early this year.

“We had her cyst removed, so my mom is really healthy and happy and you wouldn’t even think that she ever got diagnosed with it,” she related to Bulletin Entertainment and other members of the media during the launch for Avon’s Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer (KGBC) campaign held last Sept. 6 at The Peninsula Manila.

The young Kapuso star said that her mother, now 50, takes alternative medicine for treatment as the latter's body is sensitive to other medical procedures.

“There are certain medicines na if she takes, ‘yung medicine hindi naga-agree sa body niya. She didn’t continue her chemo[therapy]. She’s doing an alternative kind of medicine. But the important thing is it’s working, she said.

Although her mother is “safer now,” Rhian said, “we have to keep watching. Tuloy-tuloy pa rin ang pagche-check at page-exam… baka mag-recur.”

Initially their family was heartbroken over the situation, but they eventually gathered hope that they could lick the disease.

“Year 2011 na, marami na tayong magagawa with science and all the medical technologies. Hindi siya isang bagay na dapat mawalan ng hope ang tao but all the more, you fight for your life,” she maintained.

She herself has grown more watchful of her own health, being more careful with what she eats and her exposure to hormones as well as taking a good amount of rest and exercise.

Noting that the Philippines has the highest recorded breast cancer cases in Asia, Rhian said, “The key to fight it is kung ma-detect mo nang maaga.”

Gracing the event—which Rhian hosted with Lyn Ching-Pascual of “Unang Hirit"—to share their inspirational stories were former actress Lara Melissa de Leon and Ces Revilla-Schulze (survivors), musician and husband-of-a-survivor Jim Paredes, and cancer patients Josephine Negranza and Antonio Nicerio. Philippine Cancer Society Executive Director Dr. Rachael Rosario, meanwhile, provided expert insights on the illness.

Rhian encouraged the public to join KGBC’s campaign titled “Race to 125,000 Kisses” which aims to spread awareness and obtain 125,000 pledges of support.  A fundraising run with same title will be held on Oct. 2 at the SM Mall of Asia Open Grounds to benefit the Philippine General Hospital Breast Care Center and selected provincial hospitals.

Individuals can also show their support by purchasing Avon’s Simply Pretty ColorBliss Lipstick, in which part of the proceeds will be donated to the breast cancer fund.

Rhian's fellow Kapuso celebrities Rocco Nacino, Bela Padilla, Stephanie Henares, Mike Tan and Frencheska Farr have also pledged their support to the cause.
